That Place in the Sun

10 TENDIDOS OF 27 ROWS EACH fill Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, with seat prices inversely proportional to sunshine. More sun means you pay less money. Less sun means you pay more.

Opting to take the tour pre-bullfight saved us an experience we may not quite have been ready for. But at the height of Madrid summer, be it morning, evening or noon, nothing can save you from the sun. And so we welcomed the uneven tan.

Fortunately, the monumental Las Ventas is a spectacle in itself. Built in Neo-Mudéjar or Moorish style by José Espeliu, the 80-plus year old arena sits at the heart of Spanish culture and heritage, if not literally at the heart of the Spanish map.
