That Miss Universe

FEATURE:
THAT MISS UNIVERSE

Universos

SCULPTOR PATRICIA CANCELO forges universes in iron, silver and bronze, as part of her Universos series of sculptures and jewelry. The pieces, which have found themselves in Catalunya's Museu Nacional and Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum, on this particular night find themselves at Barcelona's Le Méridien Hub, surrounded by a lush and lively gathering of press and guests alike.

There may be flowing cava and Godiva-dipped strawberries, amongst an array of other treats, but the rosy atmosphere is hardly reflective of Patricia Cancelo's tough start as an aspiring sculptor. For one, her gender worked against her, with mentor Josep María Parés initially unwilling to take a woman into his workshop. He believed forge and iron to be the work of men, and the industry seemed to agree, producing workwear in men's sizes only.

Patricia overcame the challenges, learning much from her maestro and going on to become an established sculptor. Her works have been many times exhibited and recognized in and out of Spain. Previously a reporter and presenter, Patricia tried many jobs until she not only found her passion, but also discovered and realized her dream.

Le Méridien's presentation celebrates both sculptor and her sculptures, in line with the brand's commitment to enriching artistic and cultural perspectives. The evening's leading lady, or should we say "iron lady", Patricia Cancelo stands not only as a new figure in Spanish contemporary art, but as a champion for forging universes in a man's world.

Universos and Personajes de Forja are on view at Le Méridien Hub until the end of December, 2013. Presented by Le Méridien Barcelona on October 30, 2013.
